Here’s my video race report of the 2014 Bighorn Mountain Wild and Scenic Trail Run 50-miler. It was my first ultra in the mountains, and the trails were challenging, but the scenery was thrilling. Enjoy!
I’ll post a story in the next few days.

I’ll bet the music on your video is the same Lt. Col. George Custer was listening to when he tackled the Little Big Horn … look where it took him.

Excellent video — too bad you couldn’t take your blistered feet all the way to the end. At least you got an ultra distance and some beautiful shots out of it. I was out there over the weekend, running the 50k, which completely destroyed me. Looks like I wasn’t alone in my agony. I loved what you did with the sticker. At first I thought you were cutting it up because you didn’t finish, but when I realized what you were actually doing, I got a good chuckle out of it.
Will you be back in 2015 to conquer the distance?

I have already booked the same room for 2015! Now that I know a bit more about the trail and what it will take to finish, I think I can tweak my training and my equipment and get the job done. That sticker is now a daily reminder that I’ve got more work to do.
Thanks for your comment, and congratulations on your 50K!

Great Job !!! It was great meeting you we are also going to finish that last portion of the race in 2016! Until then we have Surf the Murph planned for October since we are already in shape!

Thanks, Karen. Not until 2016? I reserved rooms at the lodge already. 🙂 I’ll have to look up Surf the Murph. Best of luck to you!

Great video. Did you use a GoPro? Sorry you weren’t able to finish, but I love the reminder that you gave yourself. A little bit of motivation every day! Beautiful country out there.

Thanks, Andy. I brought my son’s GoPro but decided against carrying it because of the weight and I just didn’t want to lug one more item. I used my little Sony Cybershot, which stacks up well on few size/weight to benefits ratio. I took many of the photos and videos because I didn’t think I could adequately explain how rough the trail was. But I can’t wait to give it another try next year. 🙂

I’ve had some conversations with bloggers about media coverage of running events, or lack therof.
I think these homemade “reports” are a good place to start. Using YouTube and blogs we can show thousands of people what our sport is all about.
I’d like to think that you are on the cutting erdge of this movement.

I think it would be really cool to get coverage of ultras similar to that given to the Ironman. There are some really neat stories out there. That said, I did follow Western States this weekend via ultrasportslive.tv; they had cameras at various aid stations and did on-camera updates. It was fun to watch.

That is cool. Internet TV basically, right? The days when you needed a $1M studio and satellite up-link are over. Any dillusional, dehydrated runner and produce a video, event or program now.
I think that with 2-3 people with cameras, some pre-planning and Adobe Elements you could do some cool stuff.
